About Time - Crosbie Lorimer

While many of the ocean racing fraternity worked their way down the east coast after Christmas, CYCA Member Julian Farren-Price was making his way north at the head of the fleet in the Newport Coffs Harbour Race, securing a win which takes his boat one step closer to a Rolex Sydney Hobart campaign.

Farren-Price’s Cookson 50 has been a strong performer in the CYCA’s Mount Gay Ocean Pointscore series and was favourite to take line honours in the Coff’s Harbour race, which it did.

It wasn’t all plain sailing however with fickle conditions not delivering the desired performance early on.

“It was great to win of course but we should have won by a lot more than we did, given the boat we had in comparison to the opposition. We had a very bad first night at sea which saw us trailing Shitake by about eight hours. That certainly made it more interesting,” commented Farren-Price.

"The reason we lost so much time was that the weather models suggested it was going to stay calm inshore so went offshore. In the blink of eye the system changed and we were a long way off where we should have been.”

And what next for About Time? Will the boat be competing in a different future race, heading in a different direction, but at the same time of year?

Farren-Price commented, “I think I’m building up to Hobart. My previous boat was a bit small, this boat has done Hobart a number of times, it’s much more capable.”

"My thoughts are we will do the 75th and that will give us the next few years to get to know this boat and get it ready. The Hobart race is my personal Everest and that would be my first race."

"Every time I tell someone I sail, they ask if I’ve done Sydney Hobart, and I’m getting tired of saying no."
