Message from the CEO

Season Greetings from the CYCA!

With next Monday being being Christmas Day, Onshore is getting in early to wish all members a very Merry Christmas and best wishes to those sailing to Hobart on Tuesday!

Onshore is taking a brief ‘holiday’ whilst we relocate to Hobart. The next edition will be Monday, 8 January 2018, but we’ll keep you posted on club and race news in the next couple of weeks through the club and race websites and Facebook pages.

Thank you to all the Board and members of our 16 committes for their contribution this year in the staging of the many events the club runs annually and most recently the Crew Party last weekend organised by the Associates.

Last, but definitely not least, I would also like to sincerely thank my staff for their hard work and contribution in 2017.

Virtual Regatta and CYCA team up

Do you want to compete in this year’s race from the comfort of your own living room? The CYCA and it’s iconic Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race have teamed up with Virtual Regatta to share the fun and excitement of racing against the best sailors . Read more/….

RSHYR 2017 VIP Cocktail Function

New owners of Dorade, Matt Brooks and his partner Pam Rorke-Levy, recently flew in from San Francisco for this year’s RSHYR and were part of the official lineup of sailing guests interviewed by Gordon Bray and this year’s VIP Cocktail Party last night. Wendy Tuck, CYCA member and skipper of the Clipper boat Sanya Serentity Coast, and Matt Allen, Ichi Ban, also spoke about their views on this year’s race.

Other official guests included Patrick Boutellier, General Manager Rolex Australia, The Hon Gabrielle Upton, Minister for the Environment; Minister for Local Government; Minister for Heritage and local Member for this area and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. Sir Robin is one of the founders of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and a world famous sailor in his own right. He made history by becoming the first man to sail solo and non-stop around the globe in 1968-69, gaining global recognition and respect in the international sports and sailing communities.

Sailing Dynasty contines

I remember talking to member Rupert Henry (Chinese Whispers) not so long ago about him not competing in this year’s Hobart Race. He told me it was time for him to support the next generation of sailors in his family. I’m delighted to be able to congratulate Rupert on the success of his son Otto Henry and Rome Featherstone in defeating Thomas Rice and Trevor Bornarth (USA) to win gold in the Boys 420. Henry and Featherstone trailed the Americans by a single point ahead of the final race in the 2017 Youth Sailing World Championships in Sanya, China recently, before going on to take out the title.

RSHYR 2017 Prize giving

The annual prize giving for the RSHYR 2017 will be live on the large screen in the race village from 1500hrs from the Grand Chancellor, Hobart, again this year on Sunday, 31 December, New Year’s Eve.

News from the Associates

The Associates Committee have raised $3,000 for Sailability NSW through the sale tickets in their annual Christmas hamper raffle. They’d like to thank members and guests for their support in purchasing tickets. Thanks also to Bush’s meats, Blond Catering, and Oatley Wines for their generous donations to the hamper.

The lucky winner was Deborah Wallace - another great win for her after winning the Paspaley pearl at the recent SOLAS dinner.

And a hearty thank you to the Associates and their committee for all their hard work in organising the clubhouse crew party on Saturday night. Well done ladies. It was very well received by the sailors and members.

CYCA Wedding

Congratulations to CYCA member Joshua and Aimee Armstrong who recently tied the knot at St Marks Church and held their reception here at the CYCA.

After getting the RYA Day Skipper Certificate and the ICC at Pacific Sailing School they flew the CYCA burgee on the boat in the British Virgin Islands during their  honeymoon - below.
